Healthy Diet for Dogs

7 December 2022

We all want our pets to enjoy a long and happy life, so we follow the rules to keep them healthy; physical and mental exercise, vet trips and of course, lots of love. These things help to keep them in good physical and mental condition. But we should also pay close attention to what they are eating. Like us, if our pooches eat the wrong foods or at the wrong amount they can be at risk of gaining weight or becoming unwell so it's important they have a healthy diet. So the question is, what is a healthy diet?

Well unfortunately there isn't one food and quantity that is perfect for all dogs, but here are some things to think about when feeding your pooch. And always remember speak to your vet if you have any questions about your pooch's individual diet.

Quantity

A big part of any healthy diet is the quantity of food you give your dog. Overfeeding dogs can lead to multiple health concerns including joint, heart, hormonal and even skin problems, so be sure not to overfeed your pooch. With a new food, be sure to weigh out the quantity they need, and get or adapt a cup so you can't give them more than that. And when they get treats, they should be no more than 10% of their daily calories, and be sure to reduce the amount of dinner they're getting too. Feeding too little can also result in health problems as your dog can become malnourished.

Quality

Look at the ingredients included in your dogs food and do some research before you buy (or read our article on best dog food), so that you can make sure it is the quality that your buddy deserves. There are loads of different opinions on what to feed your dog - should you go grain free? Or RAW? Dry or wet? And that's where your vet comes in. They can advise you on the pros and cons of different types of food, and what is best for your individual dog.

Water

Water is an extremely important part of your dog’s diet, and they should always have plenty available. If your dog is on dry food they'll probably drink a bit more than a dog that's on wet, but either way always keep their bowl filled with clean fresh water, in case they get thirsty. Your pooch's water consumption can be a great way to gauge their health too. If they are drinking a lot more or less than normal, and you haven't changed anything in their diet, then you should always speak to your vet

A healthier life is what we want for our pets, and the ideal diet can help towards achieving it. On top of this they need physical and mental exercise, the normal preventative treatments (vaccines, worm, flea and tick treatments, check ups, etc), and medical attention when it’s needed. And no matter what give them all your love :)
